【Thai Monks】Luang Phor Phian

Luang Phor Phian (Thai: หลวงพ่อเพี้ยน) of the monk rank "Phra Khru Wimon Samanawat" (Thai: พระครูวิมลสมณวัตร) was born on Sunday, March 3 of the Thai lunar calendar, 2470 BE (AD 1927), in Ban Mi District, Lopburi Province.

Luang Phor Phian

In 2519 BE (AD 1976), at the age of 49, he was ordained as a monk in Wat Khampaeng. Later he resided in Wat Krern Krathin to learn Buddhist Dharma and magic skills from the abbot Luang Phor Pan, and took this chance to review the Khmer magic skills taught by his father.

Luang Phor Pan, who usually went to Cambodia to practice Buddhism, would repeatedly have his disciples reminded of the importance of perseverance and earnestness. The goal of magic skills is to bring sacred objects to bear strong power and efficacy. Those who make and consecrate sacred objects should remain sensible and clear-headed; only with a conscious mind can the monk fulfill sacred objects with full efficacy.

Luang Phor Phian, learning the meditation practice from Luang Phor Pan, made progresses in his magic skills and was capable of helping people remove black magic or treating diseases with Traditional Thai medicine. Luang Phor Phian became a renowned monk in Lopburi.

In 2521 BE (AD 1978), Luang Phor Phian was recommended to succeed as the abbot of Wat Krern Krathin, to the present day.

Launching of the Making of Sacred Objects

One day during the Vassa (the period of Buddhist Lent), Luang Phor Phian left the temple to handle some affairs. It was quite a long distance between the Krern Krathin village and the major road, and one must cross large parcels of fields and dense forests before arriving at the major road.

On the way, Luang Phor Phian witnessed a tragedy that a villager got robbed and beaten to death. After going back to the temple, Luang Phor Phian, pitying the misery of the poor villager, thought that sacred objects would protect people from adversity. Therefore, he brushed up magic skills learned before and began the making of sacred objects.

Takrut, with the great power of protection, is the first type of sacred objects Luang Phor Phian made. Among various sorts of takrut, "Takrut Thon" (Thai: ตะกรุดโทน), the name of takrut with one single scroll, is the one made by him. The making process of Takrut Thon is complicated. The carving of magic scripts on the takrut should be undertaken in the water to grant the efficacy of "Maha Ut" (great protection).

Takruts made by Luang Phor Phian have been popular. The money for enshring takruts will be used to renovate or build temple buildings.

Pha Yant Daeng (red yantra cloth), tiger- or lion-shaped amulet, and Hanuman Khrong Mueang (Thai: หนุมานครองเมือง) are also notable sacred objects made by Luang Phor Phian, whose efficacy include metta (loving kindness), prosperity of careers, protection against adversity, and invulnerability.

【Thai Monks】Kruba Aliyachart - Peacock King

Birth

Kruba Aliyachart was born on January 9th, 2524 Thai Calendar (Friday) in Noi Village which located in Sarapee District, Chiang Mai Province. He is the youngest among the three children. His real name was Suchat.

When his mother was pregnant, she dreamt of big white yant cloth which was very clean and pure. She couldn't help but loving it. The second time his mother dreamt of entering bedroom and the house was gold in color. When Suchat was born, the doctor told his mother to educated the child with proper care as he would be an outstanding person when he grown up.

The doctor had seen many babies but he never saw someone with the similar traits like Suchat. He is beautiful with beautiful skin color, big eyes, long ears, thin & long palms & feet. The doctor had named him as "Geng", meaning splendid in Thai. Thai people believed that these are symbols of blessing (good fortune) . Suchat has white skin and smart. He learnt faster and understood better in learning if compared to others at the same age. He never showed off or became arrogant of his cleverness.

His parents worked in farm, so he had been helping them in farm since his young age, farming, watering, fertilizing, harvesting rice straw and vegetables. He was their best helper.

Childhood

At age of seven or eight, once he saw a fisherman fishing. The fish was struggling in the net and looked painful. Suchat did not understand why the animals had to be treated like this and thus secretly letting go all the fishes. From then on, he started to have unanswered questions about life. He was kind and always set the animals free since childhood. He would secretly set the animals free whenever he saw his father or neighbour catching fishes or frogs.

At age of 9, his mother was busy with work until she had no time to go to the temple. Thus she would let Suchat sent the food for the monks in temple after preparing it. Therefore, at age of 12, Suchat was already proficient in reciting Buddhist scriptures than other children of same age. Suchat loved to make Buddha statue by muds. His friends always laughed at him whether he wanted to be a monk master. However he never answered nor angry with them.

Suchat was not only keen at learning but also very hardworking. Besides studying in school, he also learnt from master in temple during his free time.

Become novice

Suchat intended to learn Buddha dharma at age of 12. After negotiating with his parents, he started to learn dharma at Wat Chaichana in Lamphun province. He just finished his primary study that time and already had the thought to be ordained as monk. He raised the wish to his parents but was refused by his mother. She hoped that Suchat could finish his junior high school first before becoming a monk. Thus, Suchat continued his junior high and raised the issue again to his mother after finishing his study. However, his request was still denied by his mother. It was because his eldest brother was weak in health and elder brother had already been married. Suchat was the only boy left to help around at home. After his mother found out & understood his thought later, she only agreed him to ordain as monk.

Young Kruba Aliyachart
Young Kruba Aliyachart (front left) already had huge interest in learning Buddha dharma in young age.

Kruba Chantip knew that Suchat was a clever child and had the blessing in Buddhism. Thus he had passed on all his knowledge to Suchat, taught him to read Lanna script and black magic. Kruba Aliyachart learnt it well and his scripture writing was beautiful. Kruba Chantip was satisfied with his performance.

Kruba Chantip was getting older that time. He made sacred objects and let Suchat to write the scriptures. What had been assigned had been done perfectly nice by Suchat. It was later proved that the scriptures he written had the same efficacious effect as his mentor. Suchat is a genius in learning Buddha dharma. Kruba Chantip used to say the boy had good blessing in Buddhist and named him after Aliyachart, meaning wisdom of wise man.

Novice Suchat and Kruba Chantip

When Kruba Chantip passed away, Aliyachart wrote the obituary himself and pasted it in the temple and around the urban & rural areas. One day, a famous master from Chiang Mai, Kruba Zhaotieng came to attend the funeral ceremony. He saw the beautiful and powerful writing on the obituary and asked who wrote it. Then he met Aliyachart and had conversation with him. After their conversation, Aliyachart who was still in his upper year of senior high school at age 17, decided to become a novice. His Buddhist name is Novice Aliyachart.

Walking Practice

Aliyachart became a novice at 17 year-old and lived in Wat Chaimongkol for a period. He wanted to travel and practice, finding master to learn Buddhist scriptures & magic. It was not simple for a 17 year-old young novice to practice outside but he intended to complete it himself staunchly. In Thailand, the northern practice is not strict as southern practice. In general, in the religious field only monks could leave the temple to walk and practice Buddhism. Aliyachart was not at the level of monk that time but he insisted to do the practice alone. He went to Phrae province to learn Buddha dharma. In his own learning, he needed to go into deep mountain to practice or meditate in crude hut. He heard that Achan Manid had great magic power and then he headed to Wat Bandid to learn the magic from him. Achan Manid was building a temple at that time so he learnt magic and helped him building the temple at the same time. After his learning was complete, he proceed to learn Buddha dharma from Achan Bud.

He faced many obstacles during his travel practice. Sometimes he would practice in the forest or graveyard at night but he was not afraid at all and never gave up.

In the process of his practice, he met two important nuns in Nan Province. There were both close people to the Prince and had helped Kruba Sri Wichai to build the road up to Dot Suthep. When the two nuns saw Aliyachart, they told him to take good care of himself as he would have developed in Buddhism in future. He is someone with blessing from Buddhism. Meanwhile, the two nuns called the young novice as Kruba Aliyachart. Disciples were agreed and followed to call him as Kruba. (Kruba is the honorific name to master.)

Short break in practice

During his practice, he seldom had contact with his family. Therefore, his family was worried about his situation and thus asked someone to deliver the message that his mother was sick and had been hospitalized for few days. He was worried and upset so he canceled his practice right away and went home to visit his mother. When he returned home, he then only knew that his family was worried about him and wanted him to finish his Buddha dharma study first before leaving for practice. He understood of their anxieties and agreed to go practice after finishing his learning.

His families worried that he would hurt or in danger because he was very young and didn’t finish Buddha dharma. They hoped that he could finish Buddha dharma then doing practice. He understood his families so he promised his mother that he would finish learning.

In 2542 Thai calendar, the abbot of Wat Chaimongkol passed away. The 18 year-old Kruba Aliyachart had to return to Wat Chaimongkol to temporarily take over the temple. He officially ordained as monk at age 20 on April 28th 2544 Thai Calendar.

Temple Building

When he was 25 years old, which was on May 9th 2549 Thai calendar, he decided to build his own temple. Kruba Aliyachart pursued the practicing of the well-known Kruba Sri Wichai from nothern Thai. Therefore, he had built a self-image statue of Kruba Sri Wichai in the temple. His purpose of building the temple was to make it a convenient place for monks in nothern Thai to practice without the hardship to go to the northest Thai of Chiang Mai. It was also to let the worshipers of Kruba Sri Wichai to come to pray there.

Kruba Aliyachart is 32 years old now. What he had been experienced was harder than other monks since he had entered the practicing level alone in earlier age. He was not regret with his choices but instead he is more hardworking in practicing now.

In nothern Thai there are many experienced monks aged up to 90 and practicing in deep mountain. They occassionally got down of mountain and seen in town. Kruba Aliyachart would grasp the opportunity to get advice in Buddha dharma from them. He received guidance not only from masters but also famous white robe master. He never stopped and had fairly extensive learning. He even practiced in seclusion. He used to isolate himself for 13 days by digging a 3 meters hole underground and meditated over there. He was able not to eat nor drink since he had deep practice level. This is also why he could have such an outstanding result in this young age.

Kruba Aliyachart

Name's Origin

Peacock is the symbol of the temple and Kruba Aliyachart. It is because of the symbol he drew is similar to peacock image and the scripture symbol has the protection result. He would consecrate it to have the effect to avoid danger and disaster. The symbol had then automatically become his representative and he is named as King of Peacock.

Kruba Aliyachart is good at using the peacock scriptures on his sacred objects. He has special affinity with this divine bird. Peacock is known as the king of birds. It does not only represent the symbol of wealth and power, it is also very auspicious and deeply loved by worshipers.

【Thai Monks】Luang Phor Pern

Luang Phor Pern (Thai: หลวงพ่อเปิ่น), the Dharma name Phra Udomprachanat (Thai: พระอุดมประชานาถ), is a guru monk of Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Chai Si District, Nakhon Pathom Province. Luang Phor Pern was born on Sunday, August 12 in 2466 BE (AD 1923).

Chao Phraya River is called "Nakhon Chai Si River" by local people in the area of and around the district. In the basin of Nakhon Chai Si River, the climate of learning magic skills prevailed, and it was a must for males to learn the magic skills about the protection and prevention against adversity. In his childhood, Luang Phor Pern had been greatly interested in various magic skills, and, besides learning skills from his father, he often went to Wat Bang Phra learn from skilled monks.

Luang Phor Pern

Later, he and his family moved to Song Phi Nong District, Suphan Buri Province, where Luang Phor Pern became the disciple of Luang Phor Daeng, Wat Thung Khok, who earnestly taught magic skills to Luang Phor Pern.

After a period of time, they moved back to Nakhon Pathom Province. Luang Phor Pern learned from Luang Phor Him (หลวงพ่อหิ่ม), a guru monk with powerful skills and unique knowledge of traditional Thai medicine. Seriously ill patients would get fully cured after taking medicine prescribed by Luang Phor Him. Luang Phor Him imparted all his skills and knowledge to Luang Phor Pern.

On May 23, 2491 BE (AD 1948), Luang Phor Pern was officially ordained as a monk in Wat Bang Phra, with the Dharma name Phra Thitkuno. The ordination ceremony was held by guru monks including Luang Phor Him, Phra Achan Thongru (พระอาจารย์ทองอยู่), and Phra Achan Plian (พระอาจารย์เปลี่ยน).

After becoming a monk, Luang Phor Pern learned Buddhist Dharma and vinaya (precepts) and was an efficient assistant of Luang Phor Him. At the time Luang Phor Him passed away, Luang Phor Pern had been ordained for four years. Luang Phor Pern felt gratified that he could be the last disciple of Luang Phor Him, receiving his teachings and learning so many Buddhist disciples.

Luang Phor Pern

Luang Phor Pern later came to Wat Bang Mod, Bang Khun Thian District, Bangkok, and was taught by Luang Phor Oopasi for one year.

After in Bangkok, Luang Phor Pern had been to northern and southern Thailand for buddhist practice for nine years, and at last he set foot in Kanchanaburi Province of central Thailand.

In 2505 BE (AD 1962), Luang Phor Pern, 40, practiced Buddhism near Wat Thungnangrok, Kanchanaburi, and treated diseases for people. Wat Thungnangrok, originally a nearly abandoned temple without an abbot and only existed two monks, had become a solemn temple after arranged by Luang Phor Pern.

Luang Phor Pern

Getting sick suddenly, Luang Phor Pern had to return to Wat Bang Phra to recover from the illness. After the recuperation, Luang Phor Pern, knowing that Phra Achan Plian needed an abbot of Wat Khok Khamao and hoped Luang Phor Pern to stay, served as the abbot of Wat Khok Khamao in 2509 BE (AD 1966).

During the stint of the abbot of Wat Khok Khamao, Luang Phor Pern was devoted to the temple affairs and made Buddha amulets and sacred objects of various types, such as Phra Somdej and Phra Sangkajai. It was in Wat Khok Khamao that Luang Phor Pern began performing sak yant (Yantra tattooing) for worshippers.

Luang Phor Pern

It had been many years that there was a lack of the abbot of Wat Bang Phra after the former abbot departed. Local people considered Luang Phor Pern the best choice to serve the abbot of Wat Bang Phra because of that he was born in Nakhon Chai Si District and that he was the disciple of Luang Phor Him. Despite that Luang Phor Pern was invited to be the abbot of Wat Bang Phra in 2516 BE (AD 1973), he wasn't officialy in this position until in 2518 BE (AD 1975) when there came a new abbot of Wat Khok Khamao.

Luang Phor Pern

In Wat Bang Phra, Luang Phor Pern continued the making of Buddha amulets and the performing of yantra tattooing. Tiger, a symbol of power and authority, is the main image in his amulets and tattoos.

Images of the tiger-riding Luang Phor Pern are visible all around Wat Bang Phra. It was said that Luang Phor Pern often met tigers when practicing Buddhism in remote mountains, but tigers always left calmly after Luang Phor Pern chanted the Buddhist sutra. Luang Phor Pern, impressed a lot with tigers' friendliness, widely put tiger images into use in his amulets and tattos.

Luang Phor Pern

Incomes from selling amulets, performing yantra tattooing, and donations were fully used in public welfare such as renovating the temple, founding the Buddhist Institute, building hospitals and infrastructures.

The Ordination

Achan Od was born on July 30, 2502 BE (AD 1959) in Sam Chuk District, Suphan Buri Province. Before being a monk, he had caused a car accident which led to the death of four family members and a five-year imprisonment. After the release from prison, Achan Od, reflecting his mistakes, decided to be ordained as a monk for the dedication of merit to the deceased.

The ordination ceremony took place on January 6, 2534 BE in Wat Sai Mai, Khu Khot, Lam Luk Ka, Pathum Thani Province, when Achan Od was at the age of 32.

The method Achan Od learned and practiced belonged to that of Luang Pu Suk, Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao, which could dedicate the merits of the Buddhist practices to the deceased.

Bullet Takrut and its Efficaciousness

Takrut Look Pern (Bullet Takrut) was the 1st-batch sacred object of Achan Od, who had sent takruts to his relatives, only to be turned away by them because his relatives didn't forgive him. Achan Od kept visiting them with sincerity, and eventually some of his relatives accepted his takruts.

Achan Od had given bullet takruts to five college students, who miraculously survived a car accident without any wound, while the car was heavily damaged.

As the efficacious story spread, more and more people came to Wat Sai Mai to enshrine Achan Od's bullet takruts, which caused a lack of bullet takruts and enhanced the takrut's value because of the shortage of material and the large amount of time taken to consecrate takruts.

Another efficacious story occurred in Pathum Thani Province that two gangs of boy students had a fierce fight. The police found one student was kept wholly unwounded although his clothes and pants were chopped up, which extremely amazed everybody on the scene.
Later it was reported that the safety and invulnerability of the student should be attributed to the blessing of Achan Od's bullet takrut the student wore. After this event the temple was often crowded with local people who wanted to enshrine Achan Od's takruts for the great protection, which also made the insufficiency of his takruts. Fortunately the problem solved after the army assisted in collecting empty bullet casings in shooting ranges.

Related Songs

With great fame, Achan Od has become the leading role in a song "Those Who Do Good Deeds Won't Be Poor" and the meanings of lyrics are translated below:

Great monk Achan Od, compassionate and merciful,
made takruts for the protection against adversity.

Despite that the world is wide, and the road is tough,
Achan Od never stops helping worshippers to solve their problems.
Achan Od, Wat Sai Mai—Master of Bullet Takrut

Motto of Achan Od

Do good deeds, indeed.
Takruts are unable to bless those who lack kind hearts and behaviors.

The ceremony was held by Luang Phor Ked, the abbot of Wat Kokwuthong, and master Gonealo and master Fan served as the chairman and certifier.

From his becoming a monk to advancing to a senior one, he had been keeping resorting to other Krubas or Achans for directions. Then he went to remote mountains to search unknown answers. If nothing still could be found, he would head for Cambodia to look for other magic to solve difficult problems. After coming back to Thailand, he lived in remote mountains in Chanthaburi.

In BE2532, he practiced in remote mountains in Khonburi district, Nakhonratchasima. Gradually, local residents went to visit him after knowing he would stay there and practice. His status was established. People began to settle in Khonburi district and built meditation rooms to worship. Wat Weruwan was formally founded in BE2536.
