Wat Nang Phaya, Phitsanulok, is located on the south of Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat and east of Wat Ratcha Burana. It is devoid of details about when Wat Nang Phaya was built.
Wat Nang Phaya, historians estimated, might be constructed around 1967 BE, the period of Ayutthaya king Phrabat Somdet Phra Boromaracha Thirat II, because the original temple was built facing the Nan River, which was a tradition of buildings of Ayutthaya Kingdom.
According to the records of Krom Phraya Naritsara Nuwattiwong, on may 13, 2444 BE, he walked out of the ubosot of Wat Nang Phaya and saw a Vietnam-style old bell with a 100-meter-or-so-wide bell mouth. He also took a visit to the temple's vihara whose scale was smaller than that of Wat Ratcha Burana.
Phra Nang Phaya amulets are taken as the most famous and efficacious sacred objects of Wat Nang Phaya. In 2444 BE, Rama V came to Phitsanulok Province to visit Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in the attempt to create a copy of Phra Buddha Chinnarat statue. Phra Nang Phaya amulets buried underground were found when local people began a construction project to build a pavilion to accommodate Rama V, who collected all these new-found Phra Nang Phaya amulets. in 2497 BE, more Phra Nang Phaya amulets were dug up, but were preserved in the temple for Phitsanulok people had few interest in the collection of Buddha amulets.
Phra Kru Sujitthamwimon, the current abbot of Wat Nang Phaya and also called Luang Por Chub, said that Phra Nang Phaya amulets are the most popular sacred objects of Wat Nang Phaya. It is commonly believed that Phra Nang Phaya amulets were made by the Queen Phra Wisutkasat during the reign of Ayutthaya king Maha Thammarachathirat.
The Queen Phra Wisutkasat was the daughter of the king Somdet Phra Maha Chakkraphat and the queen Somdet Phra Sri Suriyothai, and the mother of the king Somdet Phra Naresuan Maharat.
Phra Nang Phaya amulets are honored as "Queen of amulets" and one of the amulets of "Benjapakee" (meaning "set of top five great amulets".) Though made in the period of Ayutthaya Kingdom, the proportion, pattern, and form of Phra Nang Phaya amulets were tinted with Sukhothai style.
Phra Nang Phaya amulets are all in triangular form, and Nang Phaya, with firm breasts and a curvy figure, is in a sitting posture "Pang Man Wichai" without a seat base.
Phra Nang Phaya amulets bear great effects such as wealth attraction, good fortunes, prevention against adversity, eternal protection, and helping someone become more endearing.
The abbot Phra Kru Sujitthamwimon had made a new batch of Phra Nang Phaya amulets for the purpose that disciples wanting to enshrine these amulets could make donations, which would be used for the renovation of the temple.
