2. [Story of Phra Sangkajai]
Phra Sangkajai is known as "Katyayana," one of the Ten Disciples of the Buddha in Buddhism who understood Buddha lecture the best. Katyayana was born in a Brahmin family at Ujjayini and received a classical Brahminical education studying the Vedas.
Katyayana, under the order of King, invited Buddha to preach in his hometown. After seeing the Buddha, he decided to become a monk and promote the Buddhism in Western Hindu.
Phra Sangkajai was good-looking and had golden skin, because he had offered pure gold to the pagoda in his previous life. The word "Katyayana" in his name means gold.
Phra Sangkajai was congenial, and many girls fell in love with him and followed him everywhere, which made Phra Sangkajai unable to concentrate in his practice of Buddhism.
Therefore Phra Sangkajai had asked Buddha to grant him an ordinary look. He then became a portly but still kind-hearted and merciful monk.
However, Phra Sangkajai was still well-loved and worshiped by the disciples as he could bring great fortune. Besides that, Buddha will ask Phra Sangkajai to lead the monks to beg for alms, so that the monks wouldn't lack of worshiping or food support from the disciples. No matter how remote they went, disciples would come to worship them. The monks never suffered from food lacking situation.
