【Efficacious Amulets】Growing Sarira

Somdej Toh, known formally as Phra Buddhacharn Toh Phomarangsi, was one of the most venerated Buddhist monks in Thailand. His statues are commonly seen in Thai temples for his being highly revered by worshippers when alive.

A Thai news report noted that in Wat Chedi Yod Thong, Phitsanulok Province, an odd event appeared on a Somdej Toh statue: cotton-like soft sariras grew on the statue, whose body had been wholly encircled by the sariras which began to spread on the head of the statue. Worshippers all felt overwhelmed by such an awe-inspiring phenomenon.

The statue was made by Luang Phor Du, Wat Sakae, in 2532 BE (or AD 1991) by using holy powders named "Pong Itthije" (Thai: ผงอิทธิเจ) and "Pong Chakaphat" (Thai: ผงจักรพรรดิ, which came from chalk dusts collected after monks wiped off scriptures written on the blackboard.) Before presented to Phra Khru Winaithorn, the abbot of Wat Chedi Yod Thong, the statue was firstly owned by Saharat Tawipong, a professor of the Faculty of Agricultural Tecnology in Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University.

Sometime after enshrining the statue from his friend, Professor Saharat noticed the peculiar substance and, after looking into relevant information, he figured out that it was a phenomenon in Buddhism named "Growing Sarira," which occasionally appeared on sacred objects made by senior monks of ancient times. It's difficult for common people, though, to take sight of such extraordinary objects, which usually secretly preserved by collectors.

To our delight, Professor Saharat selflessly had the statue donated to Wat Chedi Yod Thong that worshippers of the temple could personally view the great marvel.
