History
Wat Chakkrawat, the full name Wat Chakkrawat Ratchawat Woramahawiharn (Thai: วัดจักรวรรดิราชาวาสวรมหาวิหาร), is located in Chakkrawat, Samphanthawong, Bangkok.
Wat Chakkrawat is an old temple built in the period of Ayutthaya Kingdom and originally called Wat Sam Pluem. In the reign of King Rama III, Chao Phraya Borodindecha (Sing Singhasen) renovated the entire temple and had a canal dug to convey water from the Chao Phraya River to the temple's pond. The restoration took six years to complete. Monks from other temples were invited to live here and the temple was then presented to the King to make it a Royal Temple in 2345 BE (AD 1802).
Guru Monk and Sacred Objects
The guru monk Tan Chao Ma (full Dharma name : Phra Buddhacharn Ma) had served as the provost of Aranyawasi(forest-dweller).
Tan Chao Ma was born on September 11, 2380 BE (AD 1837). Ordained as a monk in Wat Chakkrawat at 25, he learned Vipassana and itinerated in Thailand every year to practice Dhutanga (Thudong). After promoted to Phra Achan Ma, he taught disciples and worshippers the Vipassana method. Tan Chao Ma became the abbot of Wat Chakkrawat until he departed on October 9, 2457 BE (AD 1914).
Buddha amulets made by Tan Chao Ma are so efficacious that wearers could feel the positive change immediately. Phra Chaiwat, among all sacred objects made by Tan Chao Ma, was the most famous.
In 2545 BE (AD 1992), the bicentennial of Wat Chakkrawat and the 80th anniversary of Phra Buddha Wongsamunee's serving as the abbot, the committee of Wat Chakkrawat and disciples held celebration activities and made "Phra Chaiwat, Tan Chao Ma" amulets.
Amulets were made in traditional methods and three types of mold were used:
1. Pim Lom Look (พิมพ์ล้มลุก): "Lom Look" (ล้มลุก) means rises and falls, and could also indicate the roly-poly toy
2. Pim Saeyit (พิมพ์แซยิด): "Saeyit" (แซยิด) means the sixtieth anniversary
3. Pim Maekha (พิมพ์แม่ค้า): "Maekha" (แม่ค้า) means doing business
Three types of material were used in making amulets:
1. Gold: 280 pieces of amulets
2. Nawaloha (a mix of 9 kinds of metal): 2080 pieces (5080 pieces for Pim Lom Look)
3. Samlit Ngern (silver alloy): 8080 pieces
