Phra
Buddha Chinnarat in Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, Phitsanulok Province,
is regarded as the most beautiful and elegant Buddha image in Thailand.
The Sukhothai-style Phra Buddha Chinnarat is in "Subduing Mara" posture, which is called "Pang Man Wichai" (Thai: ปางมารวิชัย): the left hand placing on the lap, palm upward, and the right hand reaching toward the ground, palm inward, displaying "Bhumisparsha Mudra". The Buddha image is encircled by "Sum Ruen Kaew" (Thai: ซุ้มเรือนแก้ว, a finely decorated triangular arch).
Statues of Sariputta and Moggallana, two chief male disciples of the Buddha, stand on either side of the Buddha image.
History
Phra
Buddha Chinnarat was built in the reign of Phaya Lithai (also known as
Phra Maha Thammaracha I, AD1347 - AD1368), a king of the Sukhothai
kingdom. Two other Buddha images, Phra Buddha Chinasi and Phra Sri
Satsada, were made at the same period.
It
is said that at first the making of Phra Buddha Chinnarat failed three
times. Then came a white-robe master, who was believed to be the
incarnation of Indra, to help the making of Buddha image. After the
making was complete, the king hoped to show his great gratitude by
presenting the the white-robe master ample rewards, but the master since
disappeared magically.
