【Week Buddhas】Friday - Phra Paang Rum Peung

6. Friday - Phra Paang Rum Peung

After Buddha's enlightenment, he was thinking way to universal salvation.
When he walked to the riverside, he saw four types of lotus flower.
Then he suddenly realized that there were 4 different types of people in the world.
The first type of lotus flower is those which receive sufficient sunlight and soon blossom,
which also depicts this type of people who could accept Buddhist teachings.
The second type needs sunlight and water to blossom, meaning this type of
people need time to understand Buddhist doctrine. The third type needs
strong sunlight and water to blossom but would wither. This type of people
would be hard to accept Buddhist teachings, and have no proposition and hesitate.
For the last type, they would never accept and learn dharma. However,
Buddha would never give up on any of the lotus flowers, and would use the
same standard for salvation.

The "Contemplating Buddha" (Paang Rum Peung) stands with hands resting
across the chest, the right hand covering the left. The pose implies a complete
spiritual transformation. A benevolent tranquility expresses the equanimity
obtained through Vipassana meditation. The meditative practice develops clear
seeing by training the faculties through direct experience.

Lucky colors: Decorations & furniture in light blue or deep blue.
Subcolors are ivory color, purple, yellow.
Avoid using grey, cloud color and crown flower color.

the hands resting in the lap, right above left with all fingers extended, palms upward.
In this position, some meditators feel the body is receptive to energy entering through
the top of the head and through the open palms.
Buddha was enlightened with eighty-four thousand Buddhist doctrines.
He was in meditating position, looking calm and kind.

Lucky colors: Furniture & decorations with yellow color while subcolors are blue, red, green.

【Week Buddhas】Wednesday - Phra Pang Oombaat & Phra Paang Palelai

4. Wednesday (Day) - Phra Pang Oombaat
Phra Pang Oombaat

There are 2 types of Buddha images represent Wednesday, divided into day and night.
It is common to see two images. One is a standing Buddha image holding an alms bowl.
After four years in his ministry, Buddha journeyed to visit his father, younger brother
and son. His father was appalled when Buddha "begged" for food holding an alms bowl.
Buddha calmed his father informing him that the lineage of Buddhas was
to perform pindabat, that is, to be available to followers who devotedly bring food.
Still today, the virtue of giving is strong among Buddhist followers.

Lucky colors for Wednesday Day Buddha: green color for decoration & furniture,
subcolors are yellow, grey, crown flower color, cloud color, and ivory color.
Avoid from using purple.

Wednesday (Night) - Phra Paang Palelai

Also for Wednesday, an image for the evening is displayed. In ancient,
astrologers had used 7 different Buddhas to represent 7 days a week. However,
there was lack of a representative story for northwest orientation in the eight trigrams.
Therefore, Phra Paang Palelai became the representative for it.

Phra Paang Palelai had deeply involved among the people to preach dharma
with fearful attitude and benevolence. Many disciples were following after being
influenced deeply and thus Phra Paang Palelai had formed a monks group.
At the beginning, the monks were getting along well but later there were some
monks with different opinions and always had conflict. Phra Paang Palelai
was upset knowing about the matter and he went into the forest for practicing.

When Buddha sought solitude to meditate undisturbedly, an elephant holding
lotus flower and a monkey with honeycomb appeared and offered the flower
and honeycomb to Buddha. Buddha was touched by them as even animals
could stay together harmonily but why the human couldn’t do so?
Buddha told the story to the monks and they were very ashamed and
promised not to having dispute again. Therefore, this matter is also to remind
people not to have dispute.
The animals in the forest had brought him sustenance. Thus later it is also usual
to see in a temple garden, a seated Buddha image with an elephant offering
a bowl of fruit and an approaching monkey offering a honeycomb.

The Wednesday night time is set at 6pm to the next day 6am, or 18:00 to 24:00
of the day according to people's own belief.]

Lucky colors for Wednesday night: Furniture & decorations should use cloud color,
grey or black grey. Subcolors are yellow, ivory color, blue black, dark blue.
Avoid from using yellow color.

entered parinibbana on this day of the week. His final words to his disciples
were at his 80 year-old, "As a flame blown out by the wind goes to rest and
cannot be defined so the wise man freed from individuality goes to rest and
cannot be defined. Gone beyond all images gone beyond the power of words", Sutta Nipata.

 Phra Paang Harm Samoot

Phra Ham Yath

2. Monday - Phra Paang Harm Samoot  / Phra Ham Yath

 "Pacifying the Relatives" (Phra Ham Yath) is a standing image with right hand raised;
this was the posture of Buddha when he persuaded disputing family
members to peacefully compromise.

"Forbidding the Sandalwood Image" refers to the time when Buddha
halted a sandalwood image in his likeness from rising off an altar;
it is a standing image with the left hand raised.

The image representing "Mastery over Passions" is a standing image of
Phra Paang Harm Samoot with both hands raised; this is from the parable
of Buddha performing a miracle by calming the ocean.

Subcolors in green, black, blue black. Avoid from using red color.

【Week Buddhas】Sunday - Phra Paang Tawai Netr

The origin: After the enlightenment of Buddha, Buddha was in deep thought
of how to preach the Buddhist theory, and he was standing still with both
hands crossed on his waist and pacing back & forth with two eyes looking at sun.
Later the astrologers set the day as Sunday Buddha, meaning to look at the sun
with both eyes. The Buddha image was later meant for people who born on
Sunday to worship. His name is Phra Paang Tawai Netr.

Lucky colors: Furniture & decorations should be mainly in red,

Seven days (week) Buddha Images

Seven days (week) Buddha Images

There is around 95% of Thai people are Theravada buddhists.
Beside consecrating the Buddha images in temple, they also worship seven
days Buddha images. People believe that by consecrating seven days Buddha images,
his or her life would change better. But how is the saying of this seven days
Buddha images coming from?

Before Buddhism was emerged, astrologers in ancient had divided
seven planets into seven different orientations. Each planet is in-charged by a god.
Sunday belongs to control of day star (Titan), Monday was by moon control
(East God) and Tuesday was mars (southeast god), Wednesday by
Mercury (South God), Thursday by Jupiter (West God), Friday by Venus (North God)
while Saturday by Saturn (Southwest God). If ones child is born on Saturday,
he needs to pray for peace from Southwest God which controls the Saturn.

After the emergence of Buddhism, these astrologers had followed Buddha and
changed the seven planet stars as seven different Buddha images. That was how
these seven days Buddha images emerged. There was another day Buddha added in
on Wednesday which is known as “Rahu Day”. Thus there are total 8
postures of Buddha images.

【Efficacious amulet】Strong romantic encounters - married 28 times

Strong romantic encounters - married 28 times

This Khun Paen amulet is very uncommon and was carved from an auspicious tree 40 years ago. The tree  was very rare and grew in jungle lush of deep mountain. Its in special black color. It was said that there were many immortals with high magic strength guarding the tree but unseen by normal people. There is Khun Paen spell & Sivali spell at the back part of the amulet.

This Khun Paen amulet was passed down from my uncle. He told me that about 30 years ago, there was a Dhutanga monk who asked for food had given this amulet to him in return. My uncle then brought the amulet to amulet shop to buy a suitable casing for it. The shop owner had offered 3000 Thai bahts to buy the amulet from him. However, my uncle had declined to sell it as it was the token of appreciation form the monk. Nothing would interfere him anyway if he wore it, who knows it might even help him.

My uncle had already married and had children. However, something happened 3 days after he wore the amulet.  He met a girl during his work and he was divorced later. What was weird was that his ex-wife did not object after knewing it. My uncle wore the amulet everyday. Anyway, due to his nature of work, he would have chance to meet different girls. As a result, he changed his wives very often. The paradox was that all his ex-wives never complaint and argued about it.

Till now he had already married 28 times. He was only 30 year-old when he got the second wife. He passed this Khun Paen amulet to his son later. Not long after owning the amulet his son got married. His son faced the same situation which he was always surrounded by other girls. I believed that these are the romantic encounters given to them by the Khun Paen amulet.

【Efficacious amulet】Named your Kumantong as family members

I had worshiped two Kumantong from Kruba Duangdee in Wat Thajambi, Chiang Mai in 1990.
The Kumantong are about 5 inches height with one in palms together gesture
and another in Goddess of Wealth gesture. Everyday I would offer
water and flower bunch to the Kumantong. Kruba told me that it
would be fine not to offer snack to Kumantong as they could  absorb
the essence of food and won't feel hungry. When you have your own meal,
you can ask them to eat together like family members.

I still remembered that two weeks after I had brought the Kumantong home,
while I was playing video games in bed after chanting mantras for them,
I joked to the Kumantong saying I would use the last 3 numbers
of my game points to buy lottery to test their efficacy of bringing wealth.
I remembered the number was 312. Strangely I won around 10 thousand
Thai bahts in that term of lottery. Hence, I have no more doubt in their ability.

Few years later, I went to a temple and the psychic asked me what are my Kumantong’s names.
I told him that my Kumantong did not have names. He told me that my
Kumantong wanted to be named. Therefore I named them according to
their statue images as Luk thep pha nom and Luk thep pra than.
They love their names. Till now I still can feel their existence wherever I go.
My career and business are thriving since I had them. I believe that all
the good fortune must be brought by the Kumantong.

Legend of Makaliporn - the tree bearing fruit in lady shape

Legend of Makaliporn

In Thai folklore there is story about Kinnaree or garuda from Himmapan(Himavana) forest.

Picture 1. Kinnaree

Himmapan - Stem of Makaliporn

Now there is even drama series of Himmapan stories.
Himmapan is a legendary forest which believed to be located
in Himalaya mountains. It is said to be the home of an assortment
of mythical creatures, such as the naga, the kinnara and the garuda.
The forest is said to be the connection place of spirit world and the human.
If one's frequency is in line with theirs, he or she can cross through to the spirit world.

In Himmapan forest, there are 7 sacred ponds:
    1. Gunnamunta (สระกรรณมุณฑะ)
    2. Srihuppata (สระสีหัปปาตะ)
    3.  Chuttanna (สระฉัททันต์ )
    4. Anodard (สระอโนดาต)
    5. Gunala (สระกุณาละ)
    6. Rottagara (สระรถการะ)
    7. Muntakinee (สระมันทากินี)

Anodard pond's is surrounded with 5 peaks which are
considered to be the great peaks of Himmapan.
Each peak is 200 yods in height, 50 yods in width, and 50 yods in length.

It was believed that the connection world between immortals and
spirits was not only in Himmapan forest, but also located in other
places such as Daen Lab Lea and Daen Sontaya.
People said that these places are overlapped in our human
world with different frequencies.

According to legend, plants or living animals in Himmapan contain
magical strengths and it is the place where the deities live,
such as Nasit, Vittayatorn, Ghandharva, the giant, Ruessi, and
enlightened monks. They live peacefully in there.
There was also saying that there were a few places in Thailand
which can access to the spirit world. For examples, Nong Khai
can access to the underwater city, Uttaradit access to Daen Lap Lea
while Kanchanaburi forest can access to Himmapan.

Makaliporn (Picture 2) is a type of mythical plant in Himmapan.

Picture 2. Makaliporn (Reference picture)

What is Makaliporn?
Makaliporn, also known as Nariphon is a tree in Buddhist mythology
which bears fruit in the shape of young female creatures. The
maidens grow attached by their head from the tree branches.
This tree grows at the Himmapan, a mythical forest where the
female fruits are enjoyed by the Gandharvas who cut the fruits and take them away.

The Nariphon is also mentioned in the Vessantara Jataka in which
Indra placed these trees around the grove where the Bodhisattva Vessantara meditated.

Origin of Makaliporn
To understand the origins of Makaliporn we must go back to the Vessantara Jataka,
the story of the Bodhisatta's final birth. Legend has it that a very long time ago,
during the era of Vipassi Buddha in the previous kappa (aeon), there was a virtuous woman named Phussati who offered the fragrant heartwood of sandalwood to the Buddha.

After the offering she made a wish to become the mother of a future Buddha.
Vipassi Buddha blessed her so that her wish would come true.
Having received the blessing, Phussati was later reborn as the
consort of Indra, King of the Tavatimsa heaven. Indra learned of Phussati's
previous wish, so when her deva lifespan was about to end,
he allowed her to ask for another blessing.Phussati asked for 10 blessings
and they were duly granted by Indra (seen in the above mural).
So Phussati passed away from the Tavatimsa and was reborn as a noble
lady in the human realm with the very same name. She would also become the
Queen of King Sanjaya. When she was Queen but still had no offspring yet,
Indra invited the Bodhisattato take birth in Phussati's womb as her son,
in accordance with her past wish. This son was none other than
Prince Vessantara. It would be in this final existence that the Bodhisatta
succeed in bringing his Dana Parami to perfection.

Indra then used his psychic powers to create a forest hermitage in the
Himmapan Forest, a mystical place not far from the Himalayas,
for Prince Vessantara and his exiled family to stay in the future.
Furthermore, Indra created 16 Makaliporn (Makkaliphala) trees around the hermitage.

Makaliporn were magical trees created for 2 purposes.

1. The first was as a Dhamma-riddle.
Yogis, Gandhabhas (heavenly musicians) and other deities residing
in the forest who have not overcome their sexual lust would
be tempted to make love with the beautiful Makaliporn.
If they do so, they would sink into a 4-month long coma,
after which they would wake up and lose all their cultivation and powers.

The second was to protect the royal family.
Vessantara's wife Lady Madri would be able to pick fruits in the forest without
being harassed, as the lust-filled group would be totally absorbed with the 16
fascinating Makaliporn trees. As such, the Makaliporn trees did not bloom
seasonally, but only when Madri went out to pick fruits. When the tree
blossomed there would be many bunches of Makaliporn fruits,
with 5 girls in a bunch. In 3 days the Makaliporn would start to menstruate,
a sign that they were already "mature".

They would then sing and dance on the tree the whole day,
attracting those lust-filled group towards themselves. These
people would fly up to the bunches of Makaliporn and have a good time
with them, only to be made unconscious after having sex. Those Yogis
who have not attained the power to fly would not be able to do so,
but they could wait below the trees for the whole bunch of Makaliporn to
ripen and drop down in 4 days time, after which they would be able to
pick them up. Altogether from blossoming to ripening and dropping
the Makaliporn lasted for 7 days.

These 16 Makaliporn trees along with the hermitage are still there today
in the Himmapan Forest, but only Yogis who have attained the Jhanas
could gain access into this mystical place. They would continue to be
there until the teachings of the Buddha disappear from the world.
Besides those in the Himmapan Forest, there are also other types of
Makaliporn trees existing in other parts of the world, as some of the
Forest Monks have seen during their Dhutanga wanderings.

According to Thai folklore, since Vessantara and his family have died,
the trees bear fruit daily. The special forest, trees and sala will disappear
when the Buddha's teachings have become lost, predicted to be five
thousand years after his death. When these fruit appear on the trees
they are like beautiful 16 year old girls and they will last for seven days,
following which they will wither and die if they are not picked up. In the
heavenly realms males and females are eternally youthful and, since
there is no suffering, there is no ageing. They have same internal
organs as humans, but no bones. These maidens have also magic
powers and possess spirits which can sing and dance.

Above and below we can see the dried, shrunken remains of 2 Makaliporn
kept by LP Jarun of Wat Ampawan. These are the original ones from
Himavana Forest, given to him by the son of an abbot of a temple in Lopburi.
The abbot have received these 2 Makaliporn as a gift from a wandering Yogi
who have been to the forest. He has since passed away. Besides these
two makaliporn, LP Jarun had also seen a freshly picked-up Makaliporn
in Sigiriya Hill, Sri Lanka, kept by a black-robed monk living in a cave there.

LP Jarun mentioned that at that time it was as big as a 16-year old
human girl, very pretty, completely naked, has long blond hair and
large bluish eyes with golden pupils, perhaps not unlike a Westerner.
It also has a stalk on the top of its head like amangosteen. This was
how it looked like while still on the tree. But apparently it would start
to decay soon after dropping down to the earth, slowly shrinking and
drying up until all that is left is what we see above.

These 2 highly decayed Makaliporn are now the size of our palms.
Strangely enough, despite its condition, the Makaliporn still possess
organs like the heart, intestines, lungs and stomach inside their
shrivelled bodies, just like a human being. This was discovered by
a doctor from Siriraj Hospital, who asked permission from LP
to operate on one of the Makaliporn.

You can see a Youtube video of these 2 Makaliporn at Wat Prangmuni (close to Wat Ampawan) here:

【Efficacious amulets】Customized amulets for different functions

Panu is a police. He is also a Buddha amulets collector.
He is very particular in which amulet to wear according to his daily job scope.
He will choose the suitable amulet to wear for his daily routine.
For instance, if that day he is doing office work, he would wear
more literal type of amulet, with different patterns of Somdej as main amulet,
Phra Soom Kor(Picture 1) or Luang Pu Sud's amulet as the secondary amulet.
Picture 1(Reference picture)
When he is on fieldwork, he would wear "martial" type of amulet like
Luang Pu Thuad's amulet. To enhance career fortune and to be promoted,
Panu suggested to wear Luang Pu Boon's "Phra Nam salonda"
(พระหลวงปู่บุญ ปางนางสะดุ้งกลับ) (Picture 2) amulet, somdej or Phra Soom Kor etc.
If he is taking a trip or take plane, he would wear Luang Pu Thuad
and Luang Pu Dun's takrud.
Picture 2(Reference picture)
There is a reason behind all these. Panu said that he would choose
which amulet to wear as he had an experience of where one day
his colleagues were arguing for small matter when he wore the "martial"
type of amulet to work. Thereafter he wore the "literal" type
of amulet and there were no more quarrels in work. Types
of "martial" amulets Panu had are shown in pictures below.

【Efficacious amulet】Lucky Kumantong

Lucky Kumantong

I had worshiped a Kumantong. There was a user manual when I bought it,saying that we need to acknowledge the Land God the Kumantong will stay together.
However, I had an urgent outing thus I did not do any of the rituals.

When I got back home, it was already 11pm. Not long after I laid down, I heard door knocking sound.
It was weird that I couldn't see anyone out there. Then I went back for sleep.
After a while, I heard the same knocking sound. This time I was sure the
sound was coming from my door. I thought that it must be someone’s prank.
When I woke up and about to scold, I vaguely saw someone about my chest
height standing near the door and looking at me. But I sill haven’t open the door.
I was afraid to know what was that and had been in stalemate for
a long time with it. I fall asleep without noticed.

In my dream, I heard door knock again. I opened the door naturally. Someone from other side seemed to rush in and I subconsciously stopped it from coming in. Then suddenly I heard someone saying
"Please let me stay with you. Is that okay?".
Then I was awake. I looked around and there was no one. And I saw the Kumantong
at my bedside. Then I only realized that my Kumantong couldn't get in the house.
Thus he had come in my dream to notice me about it.

In early morning, I lighted joss sticks and asked permission from the Land God for
Kumantong to stay with us together. Its been a month since I brought it home.
My business, love and wealth fortune are smooth. I don't have to worry about
food and clothing. I guess it must be the good fortune brought by Kumantong.
